HEY FAM. How was your week? I sincerely hope it was good. My week had its ups and downs, but generally, it was good. The highlight of my week was braiding my hair BY MYSELF for the first time. (I had some help with some technicalities of course). I'm just grateful to God that it turned out quite well. How about you, what made your week? You can drop it in the comments or send a reply email.
Today’s story is kinda cliché but, I’d like to start here because of its significance. Let’s get right into it.
Large amounts of little things, like a million droplets of water can make for better or for worse. they can make or mar.
CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
I'm in English class subjected to yet another speech from my English teacher, Mrs. Owonifari. Normally, I would listen, but today, I’m just bored. What does she have to say that she hasn’t said before? Besides, I’m tired. I spent half of last night studying for biology and CCP tests. I pull out my jotter and begin to count the colors on the unicorn on the front page while trying to revise for my tests.
Just then, she asks a question that stops me mid-thought. “Can I make a difference?”
Now, this may sound weird, but that is the same question I have asked myself for the past few weeks. For real! I drop my jotter and give her my full attention.
"A difference”, she continues, “in this sick world that we live in. this world ravaged by sickness and disease. A world that’s full of violence, hate, and war. A world whose leaders are mad. This world that the devil has now made his home. A world where correction is labeled as hate and hate, of course, is now correct. A world with so many wrongs that my right seems wrong.
“Time fails me to spell out everything that’s wrong with our world, but the question is this: can I stand out even in this big mess? Am I even visible in this chaos? Can my voice be heard above the roar of social media trends and worldly thrills? Am I even important?
“I wish I could say, ‘Yes, just start small and your voice will be heard around the world’. But I can’t. Because your importance isn’t in how much of the world you reach, neither is it in how loud your voice is. It is in reaching that one person that God has put by your side. Letting them know they’re made in His image. Showing them his love in our words and actions. This, my dears, is how we make a difference.”
I don’t fully understand what she means but I put her words to heart.
After school that day my mom surprises me by coming to pick me up. My house isn’t up far so I usually walk home but oh, what a world of difference her coming today makes. I'm so glad that I forget I'm meant to be a big girl (I mean, whose parent still picks them up from school in ss1?) and dash for her car. I climb in and the first words out my mouth are, “Thank God!” I then greet her and ask why she came for me today.
“I went to the market and was done right on time, so I decided to save you a walk.”
“Thank You, mummy. You’re the best! I was wondering how I would get home today. Biology and CCP have drained all my energy.”
“Thank God. To think that I was even worried you’d tell me I shouldn’t have waited.”
We both laugh and fall silent. I stare out the window thinking about what Mrs. Owonifari said.
A few minutes later we arrive at the huge beige building I call home. I finally ask the question that has been on my mind.
“Mummy, can I make a difference?”
“Of course, Teni. You can”
“I know, mummy. I mean a big difference. Not just in one- or two people’s lives but in the whole world. I'm just a little thing. How can anyone ever listen to me?”
She doesn’t answer me. Instead, she alights and picks up the bag of groceries she bought. I do the same with the bag of provisions.
Getting into the house we pray and begin to put things in order. I arrange the provisions in the provision cabinet, and she takes the vegetables to the sink to rinse.
“Mummy you forgot the salt,” I say as I pass it to her before resuming my chore.
Finally done, I turn to ask if she needs help with the vegetables and find out that she’s already done.
“Mummy you didn’t close the tap well.”
“I closed it.”
“But its dripping”
“I know but it doesn’t matter. The little drops are insignificant.”
I am shocked she would say such a thing, so I explain to her why it’s wrong “Put together, those little droplets are what fill up the tank. They’re not so insignificant.”
She nods and smiles. Then she goes to close the tap properly.
That’s when I finally understand. Though seemingly insignificant, my efforts, put together, become great feats.

Out of the story
Okay, guys. I trust that you enjoyed today’s story. That story speaks to me on different levels. But the major take home is that everything you do, size notwithstanding, plays a huge role in someone’s life, even things as little as helping out around the house or saving someone a walk as you can see with Teni and her mom.
INSPIRATION
I was just sitting on my bed and thinking about how on earth I could be useful to my world when this story dropped from heaven. Just kidding. It took a lot of praying and thinking to birth this baby, short as it is. Well, it is well.
SHOUT OUT
As we all should know, all the glory is rightfully God's. Still, there are the people He uses to achieve his aim.
First, I’d like to appreciate Mrs. Owonifari, my own Jss1 English teacher. If you are reading this ma’am, thank you for believing in me when no one else did. Thank you for seeing the gift of God and grooming it in my life. God bless you and yours abundantly ma’am.
Next, I want to thank my friend Eunice. I remember when I was trying to write this as a novel, and I got stuck. I came to you for help, and I remember you told me to leave it as it is. You told me that God's message had been delivered already. Thanks for your advice!
Finally, to everyone else who helped in one capacity or the other, time fails me to list. Thank you and God bless you all.
To those who would like to leave a shout-out to someone(s) whose little good deeds have helped you in times past, feel free to do so in the comments.
Do have a lovely week and don’t forget to do big little good things for others this week. Till next time, God bless you.
Lots of love,
Lizzy.
